So, I have this notion of traveling down into Brazil via road, taking my time of course. The tricky part, I want to do it with my son Solomon. He's brand new right now, but I'm thinking in about...4-6 months. I won't have any definite plans of returning. I want to find a nice self sustaining community down there. Now look, I know that I'm talking about something unheard of, but does anyone have any ideas of how to make it work/make it safe? Is it too crazy, or have people just never tried it?

Hotel to avoid in Tombouctou - Hotel Camping Tourareg

I just want to share a warning about a dreadful hotel experience we had to ensure others avoid it. We had the great misfortune to stay in the most vile place due to problems with bookings on our way up to Essakane for the festival in the desert in January.

Anyway we ended up staying one night at Hotel Camping Touareg and I can only warn people about what they face if they do stay there.

We had to sleep two to a bed or mixed in rooms - and this was early into our tour so we didn't really know each other well enough, but we had no choice. This upset one person but from my point of view wasn't the main issue.

My concern was hygiene or rather the lack of it. The first problem was that the only shower in any of our rooms (ours) backed up immediately. The owner (an Austrian woman, not a local) didn't seem at all concerned and couldn't understand why we thought it was a problem. By the next morning the toilet in our room was also backing up and the stench would have turned my stomach if the previous night's dinner hadn't already.

Four of us were sick after eating dinner there. It really was spag bol to die for! The next morning I found the remnents of dinner floating in the sink out the front - in six inches of muck. I was glad that I'd done my washing in that sink the day before when it was free of food. Ick! This meal was her second attempt as she'd burnt the first and it couldn't be eaten. Even the mice it the kitchen seemed put off by it.

There are more stories I could share about this place but that would take days. The main thing is that I would like to save people from her if at all possible, just cos it can prove dangerous to stay there.

I certainly don't want to discourage people from travelling in Mali. I had the most wonderful time. So good in fact that I'm going back again in December. Everywhere else we went was fantastic and I can wait to do it all again, just without the food poisioning this time. We were safer in the areas without electricity and running water.

Got to Mali but avoid this one hotel (it really was our only bad experience) located pres do Monument de la Paix in Quartier Abaradjou.

Turkish trains?

Hi!

Anybody here ever been on a Turkish train? The consensus seems to be that the bus is "better," but other than being faster, I can't really figure out why. I'm trying to decide between a 12 hour bus trip between Istanbul and Denizli/Pamukkale and a 15 hour overnight train trip in a sleeper, which I think I greatly prefer, but my travel partner is not convinced, since we've heard lots of mostly-unsubstantiated denigration of the Turkish rail system.

I'd love some first-hand experience to help us decide. What do you think?

I'm going to Mexico city for a week.

This city is so big. I'm planning on staying near el Zocalo which seems to be very convenient.
Any suggestions on clubbing / parting. I think I have the sightseeing covered. =)

Touristic India: Let Me Explain!

Hey, All. I'll explain first: I love the off-the-beaten path, adventurous travel, have lived and studied abroad and have certainly had my fair of wonderful and crazy travel experiences. In fact, I've worked as a flight attendant for the past 12 years.

However, I'd like to travel with my 72 year old father to India and see a few highlights -- comfortably. Crazy, huh? = )
He's in good heath, but walks a bit slower because of painful arthritic ankles. I want comfortable and clean hotels, as he is easily impressed with and highly appreciative of a bit of modern luxury and I don't mind paying for it for quite possibly our most wonderful Dad/Daughter vacation ever.

All I know as of yet is that I want to see the Taj Majal with him, and I want to do as much 'homework' about the trip to make it as comfortable, enjoyable, mind-blowing and non-stressful trip for him as possible. I love opening his eyes to new worlds, but I like to do all of the grunt-work of pre-planning so that I can provide for him the most seamless experience possible. I guess I like playing 'travel agent.'

I'm thinking end of April/ beginning of May. Maybe 10 days tops, which includes travel days. We'll be flying standby on whatever airline -- that isn't a problem as I work in the airline industry and can travel for next to nothing. What I'm looking for is 'must see' spots or tips on a 'touristic' trip which would include the Taj Mahal. Any and all recommendations are welcome, either here or in a personal message. Thank you!

My friend and I (both women) are off to Guatemala for 2 weeks. I want to go diving at Lake Atitlan and go to the beaches along the southern coast, she particularly wants to go to Tikal. We're both budget travelers, all about buses, hostels, and hammocks.

Anybody have recommendations for things we shouldn't miss? Or fun things to do? Or places to go or ways to get there? We'll be Lonely Planet-ing, don't worry. :)

Was curious what they were up to if they were performing and where, etc. Any circus folk or street performer or fire artist. Just curious.

I need help!! I have somehow created a bit of a monster for myself. I mentioned to people that I was most definately traveling to this part of the world in the Spring, and I have amassed a group of 4-6 people who want to come with.

We only have about 12 days at most to see everything. I would rather spend time really experiencing rather then running around and killing myself to see it all.

Anyone have travel itineraries or anything they can share. I don't want this to be the same old same old. I really want to discover the places. The people I'm traveling with are from all over: Oman, Uganda, and the US.

Any help much appreciated.

Missing European life

I’d like to start to dialogue with other creative persons who reside in Europe (France, or Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Britain, Belgium, or Holland etc etc ) who also speak English and share similar background with the idea of visiting there or doing an apartment/room swap etc.
I lived in European cities during the first couple of decades of my life and moved to the US to go to University years ago. I’d like to return to Europe. I am US citizen. I speak French fluently and conversational Spanish.
Anyone feeling similarly inclined who’s tasted enough of the US and misses the great architecture and non GMO European foods ?
Or- Any other Bilinguals out there who have returned to live in Europe? Share with me current tips?
Merci !

Cyclone Gene Rocks Fiji

From the front page of http://www.fijitimes.com/

CYCLONE Gene brought the country to a grinding halt as strong winds and heavy rain flattened homes, destroyed livelihoods and forced people into evacuation centres.

At 8.30pm yesterday, the centre of Gene, which was a category 1 cyclone, was located closer to Rakiraki. Director Meteorology Rajendra Prasad said the weather was expected to improve later today.

He said Gene was expected to move across Viti Levu last night and should be to the west of the country by midday today.

"The cyclone is moving southwest about 20 km per hour and intensifying slowly," he said.

"Close to the centre the cyclone is estimated to have winds of average speeds of 65 to 75 km per hour with momentary gusts to 140 km per hour," he said.

He said that was expected to increase to 85 km per hour in the next 18 hours.

Mr Prasad said that damaging gale force winds were expected out to 150 km of the centre in the southern semi circle and out to 110km of the centre in the northen semi circle.

He said Gene had damaging gale force winds with average speeds of 65 to 75 km per hour with momentary gusts to 140km remained for Viti Levu, Beqa, Vatulele, Kadavu and Western half of Vanua Levu, Lomaiviti Group, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group and nearby smaller islands.

In Suva, the central division and parts of Vanua Levu were in darkness as FEA worked round the clock to bring light back into homes. By the afternoon, all ports were closed, flights cancelled and schools closed early.

The strong winds and heavy rain brought down old trees and branches, partially blocking some roads.

On Vanua Levu, evacuation centres were open as many communities and villagers lost their homes, plantations and personal possessions. In the western division, the situation was different. Lautoka and Ba were calm and sunny but there were strong winds and rain on the Coral Coast, Rakiraki and Tavua.

There was a power blackout on the Coral Coast from the afternoon. The area remained in darkness even when this edition went to press.

In Lomaiviti, the situation was more serious. Communication had been cut off by the weather and the Assistant Roko Tui Lomaiviti, Ratu Filimoni Baleimua, had been unable to get in touch with most of the 72 village headmen within the group.

At Moturiki, some houses had their rooftops blown off by the strong winds.

In Batiki, the two villages of Naigani and Manuku had tidal waves at high tide in the morning but no damage was reported.

However, the villagers lost their plantations. At Nacamaki Village in Koro, 10 people had to flee to the community hall to shelter against the strong winds and heavy rain.

At Taveuni, a family had to shelter under a mango tree after strong winds blew the roof off.

"We sat under the mango tree for a while covering my two children's heads and hugging them tightly until the rain eased," said Lorima Rogo of Vuna Village.

"After spending 20 minutes under the mango tree, we ran up to a relative's place and we have been living here since then."

At Qamea Island, there was strong wind but no reports of damage.

In Yasawa, an employee from Yasawa Island Resort said that it was normal in the day but they actually begin to feel the winds towards the evening.

South America or South East Asia ?

Its time for me to fly asap. I have been physicaly sick drying to decide on where to go right away on a trip.

I can't decide if i should bite the bullet and fly over to Bangkok from Vancouver for $1300 , spent 1-2 months there.

Or

Fly somewhere in South America for a bit cheaper and perhaps stay less time because i figure its going to cost more.

I have $2500 for my trip.

I have been on the interent for about a week straight, and still can't decide. Last night I had a dream that I was playing guitar in the dark with someone and we stopped for a second and started again, then he left - I didn't understand the language he spoke, but liked it than, someone turn the lights on and he had switched me guitars, and the one he gave me had its head broken off.

Kind of made me wonder if this is something to do with my trip !
UK visa extension?

I'm American and my visitors visa expires on March 13th, and I really really want to stay until end of May. Apparently it costs £395 to get it extended and even then you still need emergency reasons. Any experiences with going to continent and back to get re-stamped, espec. when you've already done that twice? Or what would happen if I just stayed longer and violated the expiration? Any thoughts?

South American Volunteer Opportunities

My wife and I are getting ready for our trip abroad. We're not sure of our initial destination--either Oaxaca, Mexico and then a long slow crawl down to South America or a flight straight to Colombia or Venezuela or Peru. We'll be on the road for a year, hopefully more. We're season travelers.

Along the way, we want to volunteer--orphanages, teaching english...whatever.

Does anyone have personal experience with volunteering in S. America or know of any opportunities?

How about work opportunities?

Thanks

Can't decide between Bariloche, Argentina or Chaiten and Chiloe, Chile + What are prices like in Chile right now?

Ugh! I have to make a decision. Can someone help me?

It seems that I don't have time to do it all. I'm in Rio Gallegos, Argentina at the moment about to go to El Calafate and El Chalten. Originally we planned to go from there up to Bariloche and then over to Chile, South to Chiloe (island) then back up to Santiago over to Buenos Aires where we have plane tix to fly out in the beginning of February. I really don't think we are going to have time to go with the original plan and am looking for places to skip.

Chiloe and Pumalin Park near Chaiten sound interesting and look like they'd be beautiful but I think they will require more time spent getting from one place to the other. Lots of people seem to like Bariloche but since it is high tourist season, will it be over crowded and annoying? Has anyone traveled to both of these areas (Bariloche, Argentina and Chiloe (and Chaiten), Chile) and can give me some input? Or should I skip Chalten, Argentina (which I've heard is "paradise"?)

Also, is anyone traveling in Chile right now? What are the average prices of things? (i.e. set lunch meal, double room in a cheap but not skanky hotel). In Argentina prices seem to have almost doubled from what was in the latest LP South America on a Shoestring. Am I set for another unpleasant surprise when I get into Chile?

Thanks

Just wondering if anyone's done some extended travel (several months to a year) while still having a home and mortgage to pay. How did you handle getting all your bills paid and what other things did you have to consider?

My options:

1. Go visit a friend I haven't seen for a long time, in Frankfurt, for two weeks in February at a ticket price of $454 to get there and free lodgings because I'd be staying with him,

OR

2. Save my money and go on a longer, more intense trip somewhere further away (India, Bali, etc.) at some later indeterminate date

What do you think?

I'm planning to spend a few months in South America next year and was wondering the best way to get around... I'm in no rush to see everyting so would prefer to travel overland (hopefully this is cheaper too!).

I was just wondering about people's experiences travelling by bus or train in South America - which is better and what are the costs? Personally, I think I would much rather travel by train but is there a good rail network over there?

Any info would be much appreicated :) Kate

Hello all... I am tentatively plannig a tightly budgeted trip to Machu Picchu for the spring (April). I would LOVE any shared info, favorite places, travel group, cheap but good information.

My personal philosophy is: it's not HOW you get there but what you take away with you in spirit when you leave. Travel with purpose!

Hey travelers!

My boyfriend and I are moving to Playa del Carmen, Mexico on March 1st. We've visited a couple times and made some friends along the way, but if any of you out there have lived there (or in Mexico for that matter) we'd love any advice you might throw our way. We're going to apply for the extended stay visas and are not planning on taking a car down there, we may buy one once we are settled. Anyway, thanks for whatever tips you got! Cheers!

Need suggestions for a short one week trip

hi,

i would like to make a trip for one week in february.
i know it's not a whole lot of time, but luck is not with me currently...

i have very low-budget, but am somewhat flexible.

does anyone have any recommendations where its nice and easy to be
for a week? i could get a rental car for a week and explore on my own.

how is the weather in hawai in february?
is hawai very expensive with its hotels etc?
are there something like hostels?

i am also thinking about florida. it must be beautiful there, and might be
a little more affordable.

any ideas?

i just need some time for myself somewhere beautiful and preferably warm,
and i am a bit clueless right now.

thanks

With the possible exception of Alaska as a destination, we're trying to go abroad without getting crushed by ugly americans and the weak dollar. Any and all help is appreciated!!! =)

This news article -- http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/britain_ship_sinking -- about a cruise ship sinking & evacuated off Antarctica is a good reminder to choose your expedition carefully. I know it's not a common place to travel, but it's an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience & you'll want to reduce the risks as much as possible.

When I went, I sailed on Quark Expeditions which used Russian ice-strengthened ships. Also, the Quark cruises were on smaller ships (100 passengers max), which are easier to navigate in the often treacherous Antarctic waters. My journals are here: http://www.ttrealtravels.com/ w/lots of tips & info. if you're curious about going.

India or Thailand?

All my travels so far have been in countries I speak the language; everywhere from Canada all the way down to Mexico & Central America. I want to see something completely different, where there's nothing familiar. I know very little about these countries and am feeling it out to see which would fit the best. I'd go between 2 - 6 months starting the end of November or so.

India :: I've heard some intense things about India; how it's not very travel friendly, that it overwhelms your senses too much and exhausts you, too man people haggling you everywhere all the time, everyone trying to rip you off everywhere, it stinks, etc. etc. Is this true? It doesn't sound exciting if it is. What draws me is the spirituality, yoga, the colors, etc.

Thailand :: I've heard the opposite; lots of backpackers, fun, friendly, easy to travel, etc.

* Also, is it possible to get an open return ticket instead of having to decide when I want to return before I even leave? Or if not, how much does it cost to change the return date?

p.s. if you have a recent lonely planet book on either of these 2 countries, I would love to have/buy them.

Anyone have advice about Ibiza?

I have been wanting to check out Ibiza as a place to either visit or possibly move to, but am wondering a few things...
I heard there is a 'quiet' side to Ibiza--is this true? Or is it all just partiers? Also, are there any yoga studios and natural organic food stores there?
Does anyone have a favorite area on Ibiza to stay, favorite things to do, see, etc?
Any advice would be appreciated- thanks!

Places where women can travel alone?

I know this is a questions many women ask.
I was just siting here planing my next trip, which will be sometime next year.
I was wanting to find places where it was safe for women to travel alone.
I have backpacked in thailand, and that was cool. but I was wondering about other places.
What I liked about traveling alone, was I could get up and go when ever I wanted to. When I wanted to be alone, I could do that. When I wanted to be with people, I just met them, we would sometimes travel together.
I guess I really enjoy meeting new people.
I also know to check Lonely planet.
Just wanted some suggestions

Tuva Camp 2008

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check our photos made by Russell Roesner - our student.

My first major travel trip where I will be traveling just to travel and not moving from one city to anther or weekend trips. I will be traveling from Santa Monica California to Jacksonville, Florida than to the Keys. No more delays I've been putting this off for far too long. I'm making my plans, doing research and persistently trying to gain the little things I need to ensure my trip is successful and I'm safe. ... and everything including pictures will be documented at www.sierranighttide.com/. I am so excited and can't wait for the 1st! Any suggestions, ideas, tips, misc things / places I should see?
learning Spanish in Mex

Perhaps this belongs under reviews or something, but does anyone read those? This is something that's pretty cool, if I'm going to bother posting it, I'd hope it'd get read.

Anyway, if anyone will be traveling in Mexico or is looking to a study abroad program, I highly recommend CETLALIC in Cuernavaca, they're amazing. http://cetlalic.org.mx

They are super progressive, including focus, field trips and speakers regarding environmental, social, culture, customs, health care, activism etc, etc, etc, of Mexico. Field trips this week included visiting an organic beekeeper, ruins of Xochicalco, and a community implementing the barter system. The teachers are very personable and care deeply for the culture and wellbeing of Mexico. Homestays are an option, and all are welcoming to those of different sexual orientation (your partner can stay with you) and diet (vegan/vegetarian) etc. They are accredited and you can receive transcripts to transfer to your school if you're a student. This program is different from others in that they make it real. While you learn grammar and rules, they also teach you slang and curse words :P

I don't work for CETLALIC or receive any incentives by CETLALIC to recruit. Promise. :)

Traveling with Food Allergies

I'm going to Greece in March and need to do some research on local food ingredients to make sure my food allergies won't flare up. Is anyone aware of any sites that describe local foods in detail? My only knowledge of Greek food involves olives and feta... which is part of the reason I'm going. Anyone else travel with food allergies? How do you go about researching the food to make sure you stay safe?

Thanks!

there is a chance i may go to rio de janeiro, brasil, next year. Here are my two inquiries:

1) i was told by someone that it is not necessarily the safest for single women. How true is that?

2) Technically i may have a place to stay while there, but i need a plan B in case things don't work out. Of course, i won't know there until i get there, so how easy is it to find a hostel/hotel/other place to stay on the fly? Thanx!

Will fly into lisboa, couchsurf just a little, then take a train up to porto, maybe couchsurf up there a little, but will probably end up getting a b&b type room and def plan to be in porto for new years.

Any ideas? Any people in this tribe living in portugal?

sou muito excitada!

Cheap flights to Thailand

Hi,

I'm based in the UK and I'm hoping to visit Thailand soon.

A friend was recently telling me that if you want to go South America; get a cheap flight to Spain and fly from there as it is so much cheaper.

So this got me thinking - what about Thailand. Maybe its possible to get cheaper flights from Spain or somewhere else in Europe than from the UK, maybe not?

Anybody have any idea?

Thanks
Cheap vaccines in LA?

I'll be going to Peru and Brazil and have to get a ton of vaccines (Cholera, Hepatitis A/B, Tetanus, Diptheria, Typhoid, Rabies and Yellow Fever, malaria tablets), which turn out to be quite an expense when summed up.

Any suggestion where in Los Angeles I can get them at a reasonable price?

thx

We'll have a few extra days and want to take the train from Athens to northern Greece and see some of the countryside. Any tips, can't-miss spots, etc.? We are staying on the mainland and won't be going to any islands.

Moving overseas.

Hi, folks! Looking for some advice.

What are some good, affordable shipping companies for moving overseas? I went to send a 3.6 lb package to a friend in Italy the other day and the USPS wanted $30! Dang! It's my intention to take 3 bags on the plane, plus carry on, paying for the extra bag. That will get most of my essentials over there, but I'm sure there will be some things I still want to keep that won't fit. I'm a reservist in the Navy, but since this isn't an active duty thing, I don't believe I can use military shipping options. I might be able to convince them to send my uniforms, though, since I'll still be drilling over there.

Ideas and recommendations? I see lots of companies on the web for this kind of thing, but personal recommendations would really help me sort through the chaos. Thanks!

Back in the late 80's i set off on a round-the-world trip with just a backpack on my back, $800 in my pocket and a one-way ticket to London...back then you could bounce from migrant-work region to migrant-work region and make your way (and a not-so-bad living) around the globe...from the vindage in France to the orange groves in Greece to a kibutz in Israel to the sheep farms in Australia, there was a network of work-for-hire areas that all the hip travelers knew about.

Does that still exist? Or in this post 9/11, EU, Global Economy world has all the migrant work dried up? Share your tips and stories here...

Traveling with a dog?

Anyone ever travel/relocate with their dog? I'm looking at school for what will most likely be a few years, and I don't want to leave my beloved pooch at home. Is it difficult to get the dog through security? I'm definately into not quarantining him at all costs. (I've read both Germnay and Czech Republic's domesticated animals importation guidelines, and it sounds like as long as current medical records can be produced and fit their criteria, they shouldn't give a hassle... but we all know that it depends on the customs folks...)

Also, anyone know of a dog friendly airline? My pooch weighs about 65 lbs., and is too big to be shoved under a seat, but is okay to be set on top of a seat, and I'd gladly pay the cost of another seat or 2, if it means he doesn't fly 8 hrs. to Europe in a dark, un temperature regulated compartment, trapped in a box...

Thanks for the info!

€650/week Paris (Montmartre) Apartment for weekly Rental

Why rent an impersonal hotel room when you can have your own romantic place all to yourself? Experience Paris like a true Parisian, buying your baguette from the corner boulangerie, etc. Will make your stay in Paris unforgettable.

The apartment is extremely charming and romantic. It is like stepping back in time. The building dates from the 1700s. The apartment has its own entrance and is on the ground floor. It has one bedroom and sleeps 2 – 4 comfortably. There is a double bed in the bedroom and the living room has a fold-out couch. Fully-equipped kitchen.

The best thing about it is the neighborhood. You will be located in the center of the most interesting neighborhood, Montmartre, the spectacular hill with the Sacre Coeur church on top of it where Picasso, Braque and Maurice Utrillo lived, loved and painted. We are 2 blocks from the Amalie Poulain Café and 3 blocks from the Moulin Rouge, 4 blocks to the Sacre Coeur.

Discover this charming neighborhood full of steep, narrow streets, staircase streets, alleyways, quiet cafes, bohemians and artists. It is a breath of fresh air, far above the bustle of the large avenues, yet close to all the major attractions in this vital city.

Support the monks and citizens in BURMA!

After traveling thru this part of the world, I feel personally connected to the people there and am asking YOU to help the monks and people of Burma.

As you may know the Burmese government is now using violence to stop the citizens and monks from protesting against the military regime ruling Burma.
Several hundred monks have been arrested and hidden away.
Please act now to let the Burmese government know we will not tolerate such abuse.

First, there are several online petitions that you can sign. Here are two:

-The US Campaign for Burma is asking people to collectively gather
88,000 signatures from around the world, calling on Chinese President
Hu Jintao to compel Burma towards valid national reconciliation. Sign
the petition by going to:
www.democracyinaction.org/dia/o...on.jsp

-You can also email the EU President to strengthen the EU position on
Burma, at
burmacampaign.org.uk/eu_action.html

Second, you can follow the news online. News agencies track the
stories that get the most coverage, and by reading about Burma online,
you increase the chances that the story will continue to receive
international attention.
The BBC has good coverage: www.bbc.co.uk, as

Trip to Mexico

A friend of mine and myself are planning to go down to Mexico in mid-june for a unknown period of time, it may go until mid august, Ive read through the guide books and wanted to know about personal experiences in Mexico. Is it easier to get around by bus, train or personal car, any places to avoid due to crime, are there any real bad tourist spots, outside of cancun, acapulco, puerto vallerta and how easy is to just set up a hammock or just find a room with no real planning. Thanks for any advice.

In the MIDDLE EAST?

Is anyone traveling the Middle East? I want to go from Egypt to Iran by land in October. I'm interested in finding a female companion or two. I hear Egypt is rough for lone women travelers. If you have been to Egypt and think otherwise, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello and a request for information

Hello everyone. I just joined this tribe and am surprised it took me so long to find it. I've lived in Germany for 2 1/2 years, traveled to Denmark, France and Canada as well as U.S. cities of course. :-)

I am planning a trip with my hubby and my folks for June of 2008 to Fiji. We already have lodging arranged on Denarau Island but I am curious to hear from those who have been there... what activities do you suggest? What is not to be missed and what can we skip? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.
