Istanbul can be a bit overwhelming, not to mention a bit unsafe these days. There is much to see on the Agean Coast of the country like Kusadesi and Cappadocia. I think if time is not an option then going by boat would be much more enjoyable. I believe you can get to Turkey from Athens in a day by ferry, but you'd need to check that.

I spent time in Istanbul by myself and with my sister and never had a problem. You have to be careful as in any city, but even walked alone at night no problem. My sis still lives there. We love the city. It is incredibly beautiful and has a fascinating history. There were some bombings there last year, however, but my sister has never felt in danger, even as an American. (People do ask about your politics, though, and are usually glad if you are anti-Bush.)

Depending on how much time you want to spend in Turkey, I definitely recommend Istanbul, but there are TONS of other great spots to explore. I loved the southwest Turquoise Coast (Dalyan, Fethiye, Olimpos, Saklikkent Gorge, etc.) and Cappadocia in Central Turkey, though that is quite far from Greece. Ephesus allegedly has the best Roman ruins anywhere. I was impressed.

        Have a great trip!

          Hi -

I live and work in Istanbul and I LOVE it.... I first visited
Turkey last year with a good friend of mine and I loved
it so much, I moved here!

I feel like the guidebooks put a lot of emphasis on
women's safety in Turkey, much of it being unnecessary. Yes, you need to watch your belongings, but I feel safer
here than I did in many cities in the US. Just use common
          sense!

And just as a personal plug, I just started a business
here doing walking tours/private guiding in & around
          Istanbul:

Come to Istanbul! You won't regret it. :)

I was in Turkey this last July and loved it! I never felt unsafe. Most people, even intimidatingly agressive men, truly want to help you out and help you find cool stuff to do.

I was there for two weeks, went all around. There is TONS to see.

I cried when I had to leave. I love Turkey so much!

I spent a month traversing Turkey from Istanbul to Cappadocia to Trebzon with a gal pal two years ago. Aside from the fact that there are creepy guys everywhere in the world (ie guy exposing himself at bus station in Sinop), we had a wonderful trip and found it to be TOTALLY SAFE! Even the touts in Istanbul can be fun, although its difficult to escape from them sometimes.

I can recommend that if you need a break in Istanbul and would like to sit and chat, have tea and enjoy a quiet space, check out the folks at: www.lesartsturcs.com and tell Nurdogan that Kree sent you! They also organize tours and took us to the whirling dervish zikr, which was amazing.

As far as getting there, if you only have 4 days, fly by all means. The ferry takes awhile and it is not particularly cheap.

I am so jealous! I miss Turkey incredibly and it is one of my favorite countries in the whole world!

I think if you went with your boyfriend you'd probably have a better time in turkey. 4 chicks traveling there could be just as sexy though, just tell us all the stories.

4 days means you will have to visit again! The Agean coast with beautiful ruins and a little more chill than Istanbul is reachable by ferry from Greece at Izmir, Kusadasi, Atunkum and Bodrum. I used Selcuk as a base for a few days. I would suggest flying to Istanbul from there. There is plenty to see in Istanbul and it is quite safe. The hotel bombings last summer were in mid end tourist hotels and there was a warning. For further information, see my post in Radical Travel under Istanbul. You could also contact the girls that made that trip. If you want to see more than Istanbul, a little longer than 4 days would be good.

Go to Olympos! Istanbul is an experiance, but you'll have more fun once you leave! Epheses is pretty cool to. If you stay in Istanbul, the Oriant youth hostel is cool. Travelers from all over come through there!

This could be a bit late, but I thought I'd recommend this great little town on the Aegean coast. It's called Dalyan, just east of Marmaris, we had to take the ferry from Rhodos. I couldn't believe the warm welcome we received upon arriving in this town, met so many great locals who wanted to take us everywhere. A girlfriend and I stayed there for about two weeks in this Apart, if only I could remember the name (this was about four years ago now, and I don't have any of my journals here with to remind me.) I do remember it started with a J, and it's outside the town center. Anyway, I haven't really stopped travelling since that trip, and it still remains one of my favourite places. But, it is true what they say, it's not about the place, it's all in the people that you meet. Anyway, so much to do there, from cycling, to canoeing the numerous canals, to beachcombing, to saturating in the natural hot springs, to visiting ruins (the first known sun dial), to boat and motorcycle trips with the locals, to playing Turkish board games and drinking endless amounts of cai(tea). Loved it!!
