Should the Government Regulate Carry-Ons

A new bill in the House of Representatives would standardize carry-on size across carriers at 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches. Pieces that exceed these lengths would be blocked at security and would need to be checked in.

While the bill is aimed at cutting down on overhead bin abuse, the process of standardization would be a painful one. Airlines set their own guidelines, and those guidelines can vary considerably. Further, many airlines' restrictions (including JetBlue and Southwest) match the total linear measurement proposed in the bill (50 inches) but use different individual measurements (24 inches x 16 inches x 10 inches). Most legacy carriers have already shrunk their maximum carry-on size below the size recommended in the bill.

I think we have boxed ourselves in to thi sone.
    Oil costs.
    Fat suitcases cost oil.

I fly with a carryon only and buy my toiletries in the country I visit.

    It is simple to do.

    Yes it takes organization.

Its about living light on the land.

Yes, in my opinion carry-ons should be reduced in size. Lately with airlines charging fees for checked baggage I have noticed an increase in the amount of carry-ons on flights, and it interferes with boarding. It takes probably 15 to 20 minutes longer to get the people seated with all this carry-on scrambling to get the places in overhead bins and then the extra baggage that won't fit.

If I have something as large as what is currently the maximum size allowed for carry on I always check it. Carry on should be purses, brief cases, lap tops and small overnight bags. Luggage should be checked, even if the airlines are charging a fee for it.

the carry-on baggage measuring box hasn't changed size in years.
why are the airlines letting more / bigger bags on the planes?

Now nearly every passenger has a bag as big as the allowance. Not just one out of five, the way it used to be.

I've found that the discount airlines in Europe are being really strict about the size, but occasionally, someone gets through. The other day I saw someone go through security with a briefcase, a carry-on wheelie, and a big shopping bag full of stuff. Each item was bursting at the seams. I have no idea if he made it on the plane that way, but he was definitely over his allowance.

In general, Vueling, Clickair, Easyjet... they check your carry-on size. I flew with Swiss Airlines and they even weigh your carry-on. If it is above 8 kg, you have to check it. I'm not sure how I feel about that since I think that if you have a regulation size, you should be able to put what you want in it. In general, there is only so much weight you want to carry around with you anyway.

          Cheers!

I think it's overstepping for the government to regulate it. The airlines' hands are not tied in this situation, they can make the regulations that work best for them. On smaller planes, gate checking large carryons is normal so why should you be without your stuff before your flight? I was thwarted at IAD recently when I ended up with a 10 hour layover and a lot of work to do, but security wouldn't let me through to wait in the lounge because I had a small backpack, laptop and carryon-size rollerboard. I fully intended to check the rollerboard anyway, but you can't check luggage until 6 hours before a flight (complicated trip, the flights were all on separate tickets).

Not a fan of more gov't interference. This is up to the airlines.

There are some airlines I will NOT check bags to, as they are notorious for 'losing' them, especially at certain airports (Alitalia in Milan, for ex). Regarding toiletries, as someone who has some strong feelings about the components and behaviors of many large cosmetic/hygiene manufacturers, I always bring mine with me.

      right on ASista!

      go lean
figure out a way to not carry too much stuff. It is simple.
No one deserves to carry everything!
      Oil is money.
      Pounds cost money.
      Rent laptops.
      Recycle newspapers.
      Buy toiletries when you land.
      Go without makeup.
      Wash out your underwear.
You only need one pantsuit..not 6!

Buy light travelware which is multipurpose.

      It can be done!

If you buy everything at your destination, what do you do with the excess? I was trying to figure out which is worse for the environment, a little extra weight (assuming you pack well and only bring what you need) or buying something and just throwing away the excess because you can't bring it in your carry on.

        Food for thought!

        Blessings!

Sure we do. We all deserve happiness, abundance, comfort, and peace.

If you are not happy with the current modes of transportation and/or the effect on the environment, create change!

          Agreed SistaWeotch!

I think this is just about being conscious of what you are doing. Both the carry-on and check-in model work well, you just have to avoid excess. Given my work, I have to bring a certain amount of tools with me. I check-in everything and have no problem paying for my luggage. I love that the new model for airplanes is that if you only have carry-on, you pay less. If that is the case, the I think that the size of the carry-on should be universal. I don't think that translates to government intervention, but it would be nice to see airlines working together to decide on a standard size for carry-on. That way, I can make an educated decision when purchasing my ticket and packing my bags.

          Blessings!
