Are last minute tickets cheaper?

does anyone know if oversea tickets are much cheaper when taken at the last minute?

I have to come in 3weeks from europe to the us and I wonder if it is clever to wait until the day of my departure and take whatever ticket to land as close as possible to san fransisco.
