There's a Chinese thing called Qinghon or something like that. But it might not work (it could be quinine based, which is what gives Indian tonic its distinct taste...people used to drink Gin and Tonic as an anti-malarial back in the days of the Raj in India).

I don't understand the logic behind being anti-western medicine. although I do understand not wanting to support big drug companies. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's healthy or good for you or even gentler...it's often worse than taking only what you need in a pure, quality-checked chemical form.

In other words, I strongly advise you to convince your bf to take the appropriate actions to prevent malaria because that sickness will do him a lot more harm than a few malarone tablets. Moreover, if he does get malaria I guarantee he will change his stance on western medicine right away because the pain and suffering will be too great. Tropical diseases are not to be fucked with.

First and foremost, whether you take the meds or not, is mosquito control, but using nets
for sleeping under and lots of DEET
    based repellants.

Going for nearly 3 weeks. I'm taking Malarone, primarily.

Also, it's not my job to convince him. I cannot force him to do anything, nor would I want to. He is considering all angles, trust me.

Thank you all for the input, really. :)

I took Malarone when I went to Tanzania and you get really vivid dreams. :) I actually really liked taking it.

I also used the Sawyer time released DEET lotion - gives you great all day coverage and I didn't get any bites. It's 1/2 way down this page: www.milanomedical.com/lotion_prod.htm I got it at the health department when I got my shots.

also for about 2 weeks before leaving build you rsystem up to taking about a heaping teaspoonful of Brewers yeast... then continue on your trip taking this daily. It creates a smell to your skin which repells bugs, mosquitoes.
I found with DEET that as a sensitive person.. Iwhen I wpplied it my lips would go numb!!! I did use it, but sparinlgly.

Have a great trip and Please BLOG

Uh... yeah. I got a bit nervous about DEET when I spilled a bit on a backpack and it ate right through the material.

I ended up using citronella based repellent instead of DEET.

Malarone sounds like a good choice.

I'm not suggesting this for others, but I don't plan on ever taking malaria meds again. But, here are some solid recommendations for your boyfriend.

        1) As soon as the sun starts setting put on long pants, socks, and boots. Trust me, it's _much_ less hassle to put on covering clothes at sunset, instead of slathering repellent over your whole body.

        2) If there are number of mosquitos around, then also throw a bit of mosquito repellent on on arms (paricularly the back of them above the elbow), neck, and forehead.

        3) Bring your own mosquito net in case the places you're staying doesn't have them, or the ones they have have holes.

With those precautions, he should hopefully be fine.

I know it's not your job to convince him, you asked for advice and I gave it. I just hope for his sake that he thinks with his brain and not his ego, cause malaria really sucks and it never leaves your body.

I'm sorry to say, but Margot you're spreading mistruths here.

There are a number of different types of malaria which have differing degrees of severity. Some cases might be no worse than the flu. Other forms can kill you rather quickly.

As for it "never leaving your body", that's just false, or gross hyperbole. Though, there are indeed two forms of malaria that might stay in your system and recurr.

Adam I take it you have never had malaria or lived with someone who has had it. How is it a mistruth that malaria sucks? Or that it never leaves your body? YOu say yourself that there are two types that might stay in your system.

              Margot:

It's true that I've never had malaria. But I did spend 6-months in E. Africa. I met a number of people who had malaria.

I'm sure that it does suck.

The mistruth is "it never leaves your system". The full truth, is "some types of malaria, sometimes stay in your system".

And I don't know this as fact, but it's my understanding that so long as you treat it quickly, it's very unlikely to recur.

Malarone can cause psychosis in some people. People have had irreversible mental health issues using Larium, which is similar. Google it if you don't believe me.

I usually take Doxycycline since it doesn't have those side effects yet has the benefits of protecting you from bacteria you may accidentally drink or eat.

i'll second the info on larium - i was in a place that malaria was near epidemic, and i ended up taking larium, and the psychosis issue is a very real and terrifying one. horrific, lucid dreams, waking up paranoid and confused. the malaria almost would have been better.

fortunately, a week off and i felt fairly normal again.

if you can afford it, atovaquone is the new star, in that it's new enough that most strains of malaria are still resistant. the side effects are much milder, headaches at first, seeming to be the most reported among the folks i know who've used it.

    Hi,

My wife, children and me were using the following in Kenya:
    www.dongo.org/kenya-belgi...osquito.html
It's important to combine the different preventions. Also when it's dark wear light coloured clothes that cover your body.

    Kind regards, BoBi

Traveling several times in Africa I liked the dreams occasioned by mefloquine! The drug chosen has to be matched to the area, some of the parasites have developed a resistance to various anti-malarial prophylaxis-preventions. If your boyfriend gets malaria, he will be treated with drugs he won't have time to research. The newest drug, reserved for treatment only (in order to delay malaria developing a resistance to it), is wormwood, the active ingredient in absinthe, not sure how much you would have to drink of it...

It is usual to start the anti-malarial a week before leaving.

Tanz is a beautiful country filled with beautiful people who have done better at preserving their wildlife than some others in the region. Have a great trip!

I visit W.Africa every three years for month-long stays. On one trip about 15 years ago, I started my cloriquin on shedule before leaving the US but had to take it at a reduced dosage. About 2 weeks before returning to the US, I came down wtih malaria and suffered in the following way: severe chills/hot flashes similar to the flu, fever, very weak, could not eat food, constant nausea, always thirsty, pounding headaches. When I came home in the US, the hospital kept me in quarantine because the doctors didn't know what I had and was unfamiliar how to treat tropical diseases until they contacted the Center for Disease Control in USA Atlanta. I was eventually moved to the intensive care unit where I was in a coma for a couple of weeks and heavily medicated at all times. I was so weak that I could not walk andI had to be tube-fed. I had jaundice, which I think thats when my eyes were like yellow, my skin turned dark and scalely and I lost about 50 pounds. I had to have a blood transfusion which I was scared to do, but the doctors told me that if I didnt that I could die! They also told me that I should never donate my blood because I will always have the malaria parasite in my blood. I agreed! After I got out of the hospital, it took me about six months to recover and return to work because I was too weak. I had to have therapies to build strength, learn to walk and talk again because my throat was sore due to tube-feeding. The doctors told me that I should not to visit W.Africa again for about 10 years so that my immune system could build back up. I agreed! The 10 year period has passed and since then, I travelled back again about three times and took the as prescribed shots, malorone and the other protections, deet, nets, lemon grass oil, jungle juice etc. Nothing happened! Tell you BF malaria is nothing to play with period! And oh......if you need medicine or treatment for malaria, they probably will have something for you in Tanz but it probably might be expensive or not readily available because of distance to nearest village or modern town etc. Also, the treatments or hospital standards won't necessarily be the same as where your are from. Your only recourse might be your driver or guide will have to take you to a store front chemists or a native village doctor, unless you two are travelling to a luxury tent resort camp!!! Tell your BF that please reconsider taking some some protection before leaving, because I'm sure the two of you don't want to invest in thousands of dollars for a vacation that might be cut short because of a serious illness in a foreign land. Some protection is better than nothing at all. Sorry this is so long...but I may contribute to saving someones life.....Anyhow...I wish I could go with you in your luggage. I love Africa....and you will too!

Thanks for the info. We both started with the Malarone last night. I had vivid dreams and had an upset stomach when I woke up, he slept like a baby and feels fine. Pfft! ;)

Anyway, we're off to finish packing, run a few errands, then head to the airport.

      Thanks again, everyone!

Back from Africa and so far, so good! He will be finishing up the malarone tonight, I believe. I have 3 more days after that. My doctor also gave me primaquine, I think, to use for 10 more days, but I don't know anyone else who got a follow up prescription (we talked to a lot of N. Amer. and European travelers while there). I am anxious to give my poor liver a break before it packs up and moves away to more friendly territory!

We got some mosquito bites and one really nasty round of food poisoning that, for the bf, looked frighteningly like malaria. A quick test proved the food angle, however, so it was cipro to the rescue!

The end of our trip was in Zanzibar, both Unguja and Pemba islands, which are rumored to be malaria-free. Here's hoping we beat the bugs!

          Cheers,
          SW :)

ps: Have 2 days of pics up. Here's a link to one: www.photoblog.com/sistaweot...onkey.html ;)

If you bring Malarone with you it can be used as a daily dose as you would with your current drug. But the best part is that it is also a cure for malaria. So One can just save their malarone instead of taking it daily for if they get the symptoms of malaria and cure it with their malarone. This could be a happy medium, because you may not need to take it at all!!
