Gas prices?

How have rising gas prices and the threat of "peak oil" affected your travelling style? Are you concerned about not being able to get to where you want to go? Are you worried about getting stuck anywhere if prices suddenly rise?

just brings me to greater awareness that as i tread, i strive to tread lighter..on land hitching when i can, walking a lot, and seeking creative alternatives to air travel, such as spending more time on a land mass and moving around more slowly, moving by boats heading that way anyway...still nomadic, with greater intention.

and i eat locally. many reasons, mostly because of the increased balance i feel within me when i eat in resonance with what's growing around me, and also because of the fuel required to transport things from place to place. in north america, you can get anything from anywhere, and people get really used to it...goji berries, olive oil, chocolate, kiwi fruit, agave nectar, even walnuts in virginia and maple syrup in kentucky, you know? it takes a lot of fuel for those things to reach the shops...so wherever i am, and whenever i can, i make local food choices.

but, my reasons are not so much motivated by "rising gas prices and the threat of peak oil," they are simply about treading more lightly.

It's an interesting question, and I think it was answered, at least in part, very eloquently. For most Americans, the 100-mile diet is not very appealing, though.

My response is that I am purposefully trying to travel throughout Europe, Scandinavia, and all of Asia ASAP, partly because air travel may at some point become almost impossible for the common person.

I can always get to Central and South America by land... and I suppose, if I got up to Alaska, it's only about 60 miles to cross the Bering Strait into Russia...

All that said, I live on the shores of Lake Superior, and tomorrow I am going to call around to the ship yards and see if there is ANY way I could hitch a ride overseas on an ore or grain boat. Worth a try.
