For that long of a time - you may wish to consider just having your mobile phone unlocked and use that. Generally you can get this done overseas, or at someplaces in a major city. I know in London it costed me £10 to have it done at some shop near a tube station. Not bad. Then you just buy a sim card ...

You can also purchase a SIM card ahead of time. A company that I have used a bunch in the past - and has been very good at giving instructions (in your native language -- always a bonus) in addition to the card is Cellular Abroad. the website link for the Spain sims is here: www.cellularabroad.com/spainppsc.html

The problem with using a phonecard (that I have found from overseas, as has my husband) is that you get a card and then, if you should DARE use it from a public phone, there are all sorts of surcharges and you just go blazing through your minutes. Cellphones are a much better way - especially in Europe where there are so many people who use them and - generally, incoming calls are free.

Just something to think about :)

Espero que tengas un superbuen viaje!!

It is also often possible at airports to purchase (rent) an entire phone. We did this, and it came in handy. Not as cheap as using your own phone, but a nice no-hassle approach.

The EuroVoice and EuroHours cards, sold in all locutorios (no, not "madhouse", it means "call centre" hehehe) are the best bet I've found...

If you call from a fijo (fixed land line), you get something ridiculous like 7 hours of calls to the USA for 6 euros. If you use it from a cabina (phone box), you get 3.5 hours, and if you use it from a mobile, you get like 35 minutes...Needless to say, fixed line and phone boxes are the best...There's no connection fee, or games with the minutes...You actually get these advertised rates...

But, of course, if the person you want to call has a PC, you can just go to an internet cafe and use one of the Skype/IM proggies to talk, but you'll be including everyone else at the cafe in your conversation :)

Enjoy Spain! When you're in Granada, have a tasty beverage and some flamenco/jazz grooves at Eshavira, just off C/Elvira ;)

    Much aloha,
    WIl
