Would like to bring a correctly loaded GPS to Europe for getting about. Any thoughts?

The tourist services of just about any country in Europe are often very good and provide pretty darned good maps.

Besides, part of the fun IMO is intentionally getting lost and finding your way out of an adventure and into a new one!

Aren't GPS systems purchased here in the states automatically useful overseas?

      hello
I just returned from this trip and I'll tell you I loved having a GPS. I did finally purchase a Garmin Nuvi 670 from Amazon.com. Just to make it brief it was raining often, and visibility late at night when we would get into a new city was marginal. The Garmin did it's job and we were completely satisfied with the performance and utility of this tool.
Nearly all of the GPS instruments sold in the US are NOT Europe ready. I did buy this one through Amazon at 60% off. Which was a good thing because list was over a 1000.00 bucks.

Some GPS units drive off of a memory card system - which means that you can actually purchase various memory cards - US, Europe, etc. You should be looking for one that has this capacity - it is invaluable.

PS: Look for the maps on cards on Ebay. Best of luck.
